The following article represents the script for the introduction to my one-human show, “No Such Thing As Sober”, which is a work-in-progress. I am currently performing at open mics and comedy clubs to build my content. In a year or so, the one-hour show will (ideally) be complete and I will begin booking theaters around the country.

In the meantime, here is the introduction, which explains the title of the show.

On my birthday in 2018 I finally gave up booze for good. Against the advice of my friends, family, and even my doctor, I quit cold turkey.

“Cold turkey”, by the way, is an interesting phrase. We all know what it means, but like with the vast majority of idioms, most people have no clue about how it came to mean what it means.

Why do we say we’re quitting something “cold turkey”? Why not “fast chicken” or “hot porcupine”? Why is it turkey and why does it have to be cold?

According to a quick Duck-Duck-Go search (I gave up Google cold turkey about three years ago) the term “cold turkey” evolved from the phrase “talk turkey” which — according to the Reader’s Digest — was first recorded in 1824.
